EMAIL FROM RECOVERED ANOREXIC

Dear Kathy. Thank you for your site on eating disorders. I am a 52 year old recovered anorexic. Although my anorexia was 30 years ago, I want to state something that I find extremely important that those with anorexia should know about the long term effects of anorexia. As a 52-year old, I suffer from osteoarthritis in most of my joints (polyarthritis). My rheumatologist says that to his knowledge there have been no studies done on the long-term effects of arthritis for those who suffered in young adulthood but he agrees that this devastating disease could have lead to my disintegration of cartilage and healthy joint tissue. Today I cannot enjoy the activities I once loved - tennis, dancing, aerobics, etc. I cannot even run around with my granddaughter or enjoy a day of shopping at the mall with my daughter. The pain I experience today is debilitating and causes great angst and depression. I urge all those with low self esteem and eating disorders to reach out for help. I wish
I had gotten help before I developed an eating disorder. I only wish I could help someone through sharing my experience. Marian :-)

Just started this book, and found this:
"The terror and hurt in my story happened because when I was young, I thought others were the authors of my fortune or misfortune; I did not know that a person could hold up a wall made of imaginary bricks and mortar against the horrors and cruel dark tricks of time that assail us, and be the author therefore of themselves."
