In this hectic modern world, meditation techniques are an invaluable tool for helping us to relax.
For those suffering from an eating disorder or any stress related problem, the benefits are incredible.I remember clearly when my therapist first suggested that I learn some meditation techniques - I had been seeing her for about a year and was still totally manic. As far as I was concerned, though, I was doing really well.
Then in the middle of a session she suddenly said, "look, I'm not saying I want you to be serene, but...."
Then she suggested that I try meditation. All I could think was, 'How on earth am I going to fit that into my day!'
Anyway, I did some searches on the net, bought a book, and tried to do about ten minutes a day.
I found that it really did help. Meditation techniques take you to another place - they help you to see the bigger picture, and how small our problems really are.
At first they help you increase your awareness of yourself and who you really are. Then, as you progress, you become increasingly aware of your connection to others and to the universe as a whole.
The spiritual freedom and peace that's attained if you stick at it is incredible.
And gradually, you find that this feeling stays with you throughout your day - not only whilst meditating. It completely changes your whole perspective.
What's more, meditation is fun!
It frees us from the trivialities of life and helps us to transcend to another level where we can see things as though we're outside of them. By achieving a different perspective, we can often see the funny side of things - and of ourselves too!
Try this - it's called Bubbles Meditation and is great for creating a real feel good sensation.
Find a comfortable, quiet place. Sit either on a chair with your feet flat on the floor and palms resting upward, on top of your thighs. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Take five deep breaths, feeling yourself centering in calmness. In your mind’s eye, visualize yourself blowing golden bubbles of light, each time you exhale.
These are bubbles of joy and each time you reach out an pop one, giggle. Pop as many as you can, imagining glowing streams of joy flowing through your finger and into your heart chakra and bringing you inner peace. As you feel your heart chakra opening, you may find yourself laughing uncontrollably, and that’s wonderful. When you are ready, slowly come back into the room and open your eyes.
There are many, many meditation techniques which we can learn. One which is becoming increasingly popular is alpha state meditation.
